GDPR and Ad Tracking in the EU: What Needs Consent
What GDPR and the ePrivacy rules mean for Google Ads and Meta tracking in the EU and UK: what needs consent, what Google requires, and server-side limits.
Tracking
Octomize sets up conversion tracking for businesses that advertise on Google and Meta: GA4, Google Tag Manager, enhanced conversions, the Meta Conversions API, server-side tracking and offline conversion imports. The goal is simple. Every lead and sale gets counted once, with the right value, in every platform that bids on it.
What's included
Google’s and Meta’s automated bidding decides who to show your ads to based on the conversions you report. If you count every newsletter signup as a lead, the platforms find you more newsletter signups. If half your purchases never reach Meta, it learns from the other half.
We fix that before anything else. The work is unglamorous: tag audits, event naming, deduplication, conversion values and consent settings. It also has the biggest effect on what you get for your ad spend.
For e-commerce, purchase tracking with the right revenue value, plus profit-aware data through ProfitMetrics when you have margin data. For lead generation, offline conversion imports, so the platforms learn which leads became customers. For both, enhanced conversions in Google Ads, the Conversions API for Meta, and server-side tracking where browser losses are large enough to matter.
In the EU and the UK, ad tracking needs the visitor’s consent first. We connect your consent banner to Consent Mode v2 and gate every other tag on it. GDPR and ad tracking in the EU explains what needs consent and why server-side tracking doesn’t change that.
We’re an official partner of TAGGRS for server-side tracking and of ProfitMetrics for profit tracking.

How it works
We compare what your ad platforms report with what your CRM or shop says actually happened, and list every gap: double counting, missing events, wrong values.
We decide which events matter, which values they carry and which platforms receive them. Lead gen and e-commerce need different answers.
We implement in Google Tag Manager, server-side where needed, and test every event end to end before it goes live.
Tracking breaks when sites change. We check it every week as part of account management and fix issues before they cost you data.
What we do: the system
Before we touch an account, we set the plan: which channels, what budget, what a lead or a sale is worth to you, and what we test first.
Most paid traffic is lost on the page, not in the ad. We build or rework the page around one offer and one action, then keep improving it on real visitor behavior.
If the numbers are wrong, every optimization is a guess. We set up tracking that holds up against ad blockers and cookie limits, and send real outcomes back to the ad platforms.
With the plan, the page and the tracking in place, we build the campaigns and optimize them every week on real data.
You see sales, profit and lead quality, the numbers your business runs on, not clicks and impressions.
Once the system runs, the data shows where else you can grow. We bring you the ideas.

FAQ
Common causes are counting every form submit as a conversion, firing the tag twice, missing conversions blocked by browsers or consent, and attribution windows that differ between tools. The audit shows which of these applies to you.
Your website sends events to a server you control, and that server forwards them to Google and Meta. Fewer events get lost to ad blockers and browser limits, and you decide what data leaves your site. We use TAGGRS, where we're an official partner, when the extra accuracy is worth the cost.
Enhanced conversions send hashed customer data, like an email address, with your conversion so Google can match more conversions to ad clicks. They work for both sales and leads.
For lead generation, a form fill isn't the result you want. Offline imports send what happened next, such as a qualified lead, a booked call or a closed deal, from your CRM back to Google and Meta, so they bid for those outcomes.
We connect tracking to Consent Mode v2 and your cookie banner, so tags only collect what the visitor has agreed to. Your legal setup, such as your privacy policy, stays your responsibility, and we tell you what it needs to cover.
