Ownership & safety
Remove an agency's or freelancer's access
Unlink the agency's manager account in Google Ads, remove their users from GA4, Tag Manager, Search Console and Merchant Center, remove them as a partner in Meta, and remove their website login. If you own the accounts, you keep all your data and history.
Steps
Google Ads
- Open Admin › Access and security, then the Managers tab.
- Find the agency’s manager account and click Remove access in the Actions column, then Unlink.
- In the list of users, click Remove access in the Actions column next to any agency user.
GA4: Admin › Account access management, tick the agency’s users, click Remove.
Tag Manager: Admin › User Management, select each agency user, click Remove, then Save. Check the account and each container.
Search Console: Settings › Users and permissions, open the menu next to each agency user, click Remove access. If they were a verified owner, also delete their token under Unused ownership tokens.
Merchant Center: Settings › Access and services, click Manage next to each agency user, then Remove person.
Meta: in Business Suite, open Settings › Partners, select the agency, click Options, then Remove from business portfolio.
Shopify: Settings › Users, open the collaborator and click Remove.
WordPress: Users, hover over the agency’s user, click Delete and attribute their content to your own user.
Our notes
- Billing first. Check that the payment method on Google Ads and Meta is yours before you unlink anything.
- Change shared passwords. If you ever shared a password, change it now and turn on two-step verification.
- Can’t remove them? Then they own the account, not you. Read who should own your ad accounts and ask for a transfer in writing.

FAQ
Questions
Will my campaigns stop when I unlink the agency?
No. Your account keeps its campaigns and history. Two things can change: ad groups using remarketing lists shared from the agency's manager stop running, and if the agency's manager pays through monthly invoicing, the account stops serving. Sort out billing first.
Should I tell the agency first?
Usually yes, and ask for any reports, audiences or creative files you want to keep before you remove them.
